Highlights of the Area

My wife and I completed our PADI open water dives with the "Seychelles under water centre" at the "Coral Strand Hotel" on Mahe in March 1997.

We heartily recommend this PADI 5-star centre as they were very helpful and friendly. (Not to mention the 10% discount for those staying at the Coral Strand Hotel).

They have an excellent high-speed twin engined catamaran to get you to the dive sites. Most transfer times < 15mins. All entries to the water are by back roll (failing that, jump overboard and put your kit on in the water). Note you will have to wade out to the boat with your kit as there is no jetty, when there is surf, this can be fun!

Visibility in February was 10-20m depending upon depth, water temp. 25-30C, didn't find a thermocline but didn't dive below 15m. Surf varied from 1.2m to 0m (Yes, flat calm). Tons of colourful fish and coral. Turles and rays (my wife saw both, I saw neither (sulk!!!!!)), Whale shark at the more distant dive sites.

All equipment (incl. wet-suits (mandatory)) is available for hire. The dive centre has 2 satellite centres on Mahe - at the Northolme Hotel, and the Reef Hotel. There is another satellite centre on Praslin Island.

There are a couple of other dive centres close by, - the "Devils of the sea" and another dive centre at the "Plantation Club" hotel, but I didn't speak to anyone who has dived there.

If anyone goes there, please pass on our regards to Lilian and Ingrid.

Have fun,
David and Christina Richardson
